Trump’s Neglect of Puerto Rico: A Legacy of Economic Harm and Delayed Aid
Trump’s rallies consistently reveal his stance, not just on political issues but also his regard—or lack thereof—for places like Puerto Rico. From paper-towel-throwing photo-ops to unpaid debts, Trump’s relationship with Puerto Rico has been marked by intentional neglect, insensitivity, and economic indifference.
I want to dive into how his policies, actions, and rhetoric have impacted Puerto Ricans, particularly during and after the devastation of Hurricane Maria.
My Personal Experience During Hurricane Maria
Reflecting on Maria, I remember vividly how life came to a standstill. Essential resources grew scarce, and every day was a struggle. Relief efforts were delayed to accommodate Trump’s visit, taking away precious time needed to help those in desperate need. Food supplies were running low; flights off the island became uncertain. But while many recall him throwing paper towels, the real impact was in the lack of organized response that followed. People’s livelihoods were interrupted for nearly a year, with some of my friends unable to work or provide for their families.
For a deeper dive into Maria's personal toll, I shared my reflections in the posts, Honoring Hurricane Maria Victims and Post-Hurricane Maria Thoughts. These experiences emphasize how disheartening it was to see a lack of empathy and action from those in power during one of Puerto Rico’s darkest times.
A Public Relations Stunt Instead of True Support
During his visit, Trump’s paper towel incident became emblematic of his approach—symbolic gestures over substantial action. Many of us were shocked by his lack of genuine support, particularly when he halted relief efforts to accommodate his photo-op.
Intentional Delays in Aid Distribution
His administration withheld much-needed federal aid despite promises, leaving communities without power and basic infrastructure for months. Business owners suffered, families struggled, and entire regions were left to fend for themselves with limited resources. Reports confirmed the delays and administrative hurdles that Puerto Ricans faced during the prolonged recovery.
Broken Economic Promises and a History of Neglect
Trump’s financial dealings with Puerto Rico extend beyond his presidency. In 2015, his failed golf course venture left the island with $33 million in unpaid debt. This pattern underscores how little he’s done to strengthen Puerto Rico’s economy, leaving locals to pick up the pieces. This NPR report explores the financial toll of Trump’s failed venture on Puerto Rican taxpayers.
Viewing Puerto Rico as Disposable: Trump's Proposal to Sell the Island
Beyond economic neglect, Trump’s attitude toward Puerto Rico has been clear. According to reports, he even suggested selling Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, treating the island and its people as a commodity rather than recognizing their United States citizenship and need for federal support during a crisis.
Challenges in Accessing Healthcare and Federal Support
Policies under his administration made it difficult for Puerto Ricans to access Medicaid and other federal support, particularly harmful post-Maria when healthcare was critical. The administration’s imposition of work requirements for Medicaid would have further strained local families struggling to get back on their feet. Many communities had limited healthcare access due to these policies, which impacted their recovery.
Underestimating Maria’s Death Toll and Dismissing Puerto Rican Struggles
Trump’s dismissive comments on the Hurricane Maria death toll showed a lack of understanding or empathy for the depth of loss and trauma Puerto Ricans faced. Such remarks minimized the real impact on thousands of families who lost loved ones. NPR reported on his comments downplaying the tragedy.
Failure to Address Puerto Rico’s Debt Crisis
Trump’s lack of action on Puerto Rico’s ongoing $72 billion debt left the island struggling economically. His inaction exacerbated an already precarious situation, with the debt crisis impacting jobs, healthcare, and essential services.
The reality is that Trump’s policies and actions, combined with an apparent lack of empathy, have profoundly affected Puerto Rico. From ignoring economic debts to minimizing the severity of disasters, he’s left behind a troubling legacy of intentional neglect that still impacts daily life for many Puerto Ricans.
Being a State is not an Option, We are our Own Nation
After writing all of this, I think my friend Dean Huertas captured the sentiment of many individuals like me in this short video.
The Importance of Supporting Juan Dalmau for Puerto Rico’s Future
We must ensure Juan Dalmau wins the governor’s election over Jennifer Gonzalez, a MAGA-supporting Trump ally who has held crucial leadership roles in Puerto Rico for years. Gonzalez’s priorities have often aligned with her personal and political ambitions rather than the well-being of our island.
The Politician Endorsed by Bad Bunny
Benito Martinez, known globally as Bad Bunny, has openly endorsed Juan Dalmau and the coalition La Alianza, recognizing the need for leaders who genuinely prioritize Puerto Rico's future. His influence resonates with millions, and his support for Dalmau underscores a movement fueled by Puerto Ricans determined to reclaim their island's future.
This past weekend, a caravan of over 5,000 cars took to the streets, showing overwhelming support for Dalmau and La Alianza’s candidates. This remarkable display of unity and dedication reflects the deep-rooted desire for change. I’ll dive into this movement in greater detail in my next post.
We cannot allow a MAGA Republican to govern our island, using it to advance their interests. Benito and countless others who genuinely care for Puerto Rico know this, and together, we have the power to make a lasting impact on Puerto Rico’s future.
