Honoring the Life and Legacy of Ramon Morales
A Friendship That Began with a LinkedIn Group and a Phone Call
In 2008, my life changed when Lucilla introduced me to Ramon Morales. She insisted I meet this entrepreneur from Puerto Rico, the force behind the LinkedIn group Friends of Puerto Rico. We talked for hours when I finally picked up the phone and called Ramon. It was the beginning of a friendship that would profoundly shape my life.
Ramon invited us to help him manage the Group he had created and for years we helped him with this task.
The Warmth of a Host and a Lifelong Friendship
In 2010, I planned to attend the Twitter Developer Conference in San Francisco. Not having been to the city before, I sought advice from Ramon. His response was immediate and generous: "Stay at my home." When I arrived at SFO Airport, Ramon was there to greet me, and he opened his home in Silicon Valley, giving me a room and showing me the warmth of true hospitality. During that trip, Ramon and his wife, Denise, pampered me, ensuring my first visit to San Francisco was unforgettable.
A Special Bond with My Family
Shortly after that trip, I learned I would be a father. This news added another layer to my bond with Ramon. He was not just a friend; he became family. When my daughter Daniela was born, her relationship with Ramon blossomed. It started over FaceTime, where Ramon’s natural ability to connect with children shone through, and it grew stronger when he moved to Puerto Rico in 2019. Daniela and Ramon spent countless hours talking, laughing, and sharing stories. Their bond was unique, and his presence in her life was a gift.
A Mentor, A Supporter, A Guide
Ramon was the biggest supporter of my projects. He wasn’t just a friend but a mentor who connected me with other tech entrepreneurs, shared our work, and always spoke highly of us. His support came in many forms, from offering advice to making valuable introductions. Ramon was a genuine connector, always eager to help others succeed.
Learning Together: A Journey of Discovery
Many firsts marked my friendship with Ramon, each one a step deeper into our shared journey of discovery. In 2010, he introduced me to the world of medical marijuana, patiently explaining its benefits and uses with the depth of knowledge that only Ramon could offer. Fast forward to 2018, and it was Ramon who took me to a dispensary, where I experienced cannabis for the first time. Walking into that dispensary felt like a family reunion—Ramon was beloved there, like a cherished uncle, known and appreciated by everyone. His generosity in sharing knowledge was boundless, and I was fortunate to be on the receiving end of his wisdom.
A Stroke Could Not Stop Ramon from Living Life and Spreading Joy
In September 2015, while on vacation with my family, I received the news that shook me to the core—Ramon had suffered a stroke. It was a life-altering event for Ramon, his wife Denise, and their son Gabriel. I remember the overwhelming worry, fearing my dear friend might not make it through. But Ramon, with his indomitable spirit and sheer willpower, pushed through this monumental challenge.
What amazed me most was that, even in the face of such adversity, Ramon never lost his positive outlook. Despite the difficulties left in the wake of his stroke, he continued to live life with an infectious joy that uplifted everyone around him. His resilience and attitude were nothing short of inspiring, reminding me daily of the strength of the human spirit.
Ramon’s Return to His Homeland
In 2019, Ramon decided to return to Puerto Rico, a moment that filled me with happiness. Having him so close by, just a few minutes’ drive away, was a cherished gift. His return brought us closer geographically and strengthened our bond in ways I will always treasure. The memories we created during this time are etched in my heart, and I will carry them with me forever.
Living Close to a Friend
In 2023, when our rent was raised significantly, Ramon came to the rescue. He helped us secure an apartment in the same building as him, making us neighbors. For the past 17 months, being Ramon’s downstairs neighbor was a blessing. I visited him frequently, discussing business challenges, politics, and life. I am incredibly grateful for the time we spent together.
A Final Goodbye
When Ramon passed, I was the second person to reach him. I took the liberty of closing his eyes and sending my warrior friend to Valhalla. The loss is profound, and I know I will miss him deeply.
I am grateful for the trust his family has granted me.
I know many of you who knew Ramon will also feel this void.
Supporting Ramon’s Family
Ramon was a loving husband to Denise and a devoted father to Gabriel. His passing has left a significant gap in their lives. As they navigate this challenging time, I ask for your support. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with the costs associated with his burial and to honor him in the way he deserves.
Ramon was a man who gave so much to his community, his family, and his friends. Now, it’s our turn to give back to his family in their time of need. Any donation, regardless of size, will be greatly appreciated and will go directly to supporting Denise and Gabriel during this difficult time.
