Think Before You Post or Share

In 2004 I left the Island of Puerto Rico to go and work in Midtown Manhattan. I have a deep appreciation for that city and the many great people I met who are know close friends.

A few months into my new job in New York City, I learned that some of the co-workers that sat near my cubicle were impacted by a tragedy commemorated each year on this day.

I remember the fire alarm sounding at our building at 345 Park Avenue. I have always been very alert of my surroundings (I attribute this to my military training and growing up in a dangerous neighborhood ) and I was one of the first people to hit the stairs. My cubicle was on the 39th floor and we were given the false alarm notice when we were around floor 21.

Walking back up the stairs, I overheard the some of the conversations and found out that a small group of people who reacted quickly had been affected by the events on that particular day. I was probably the only one that had not been near ground zero on that day. Some of my co-workers lost their co-workers and almost lost their lives on that horrible day.

Since that walk up those stairs in 2004, I have been a bit more sensitive towards the conversations that go around on a day such like today.

I wrote a post on Facebook this morning after seeing many post images they copied and share with generic messages. I share it here again to see if I can make us all think a bit more about those who are haunted by this tragedy that many of us will never understand.
