5 Ways Collaborating Online Landed Me Unique Opportunities

Individuals who only contact you or participate when they need something miss out on many things. I am sure I can create a list of thousands of things but I wanted to start out with these 5 examples on how being helpful and being there most of the time can help you with your online presence, business, and on the personal side also.

One of the things many people don’t get of having an online community. Is that you need to support the community even when you might not need anything. Like my good friend, mentor, and Business partner @chrisbrogan says you have to keep your relationships warm.  Supporting and being part of the community should be about giving. Online I see the opposite most people reach out only when they need something.

I try to get around my favorite blogs like @chrisbrogan, @michaeldcc, @undodigital, @margieclayman, @thebrandbuilder and many other blogs but like many of us my time is limited. I love reading and exchanging ideas on Kitchen Table Companies and sometimes it might not go in for a few days.

More out of Collaborating when not expecting anything

Something I have learned from always collaborating with individuals is that I have gotten so much more from it when I was expecting absolutely nothing for example:

1. Partnership and Friendships with Top Blogger

Commenting on @chrisbrogan’s blog has landed me a great opportunity to partner up with him and the rest of the awesome individuals at Human Business Works. Chris has also served as a mentor and a coach for anything I need for quite some time. The results of how I benefit from my friendship from Chris is because I support him in everything he does. I try to be there to take advantage of the great content he gives out since I highly benefit with it. I also try to give Chris back part of what he has given me by looking for ways that those that still don’t know about Chris Brogan get to know of his awesome work.

2. Mentions in Blogs with Quality Traffic

I also met @margieclayman, which I consider a friend although I have never met her in person. Margie has been very supportive and has mentioned me in multiple blog posts. I love the way Margie writes and I have to say that if there is a blogger uniting others Margie Clayman is that person. Her discipline and talent for writing are in line to where I want to be in my future blogging efforts. Margie has connected me with many top bloggers and individuals that are at the top of their game in their industries.

3. Mention in the Best Book on Social Media ROI

Trying to understand Social Media Return on Investment I landed on this awesome presentation created by Olivier Blanchard better known on twitter as @thebrandbuilder over time I have not found someone who can write very detailed and creative case studies that nobody else can match. By always sharing his content, reading his tweets and blogs, and waiting anxiously for his neat book Social Media ROI I was able to establish a relationship with him that even got me a mention in his Social Media ROI: Managing and Measuring Social Media Efforts in Your Organization(Amazon Affiliate Link) in the Intro Section. I really don’t think I did as much for Olivier as for what he has done for its goals and me in understanding business from a social media perspective.

4. Lots of Love & Free Advertising on one of my Favorite Local Blogs

Poder 5 in English would be translated to be the 5th power but it’s meaning has to do with the 5th amendment and how we need to monitor our local press here in Puerto Rico. My good friend @michaeldcc writes the Poder 5 blog that is one that is highly needed here in Puerto Rico. I have commented and collaborated on his blog on multiple occasions. Every time I have an important event Michael makes sure to spread it out to his community. Because I am always there for Michael he is always there for me. A few months ago when he heard business was not going well for me he sent me good vibes and also put an ad up of CIMA IT Solutions Corp (which is still up). Something I really appreciate since Michael always sends a good deal of traffic to my blog. Michael is the most selfless blogger I have met in Puerto Rico and I really want to continue supporting him as much as I can.

5. Artistic and Creative Biz Partner

I also have my good friend @ricklipsett who runs @undodigital he has become a key business partner on the creative and design side. Rick is very talented and also very disciplined. Our friendship started via our blogs and twitter. Rick was always commenting on my blog and from them we have worked on multiple projects making Papaheroes.com our flagship project.

Overall I have had many great opportunities and have made a lot of awesome people by sharing genuinely and always being there like my good friend @chrisbrogan recommends.

If you are one of those individuals that only show up when you need something you are not being as effective as you can be. If you collaborate on ongoing conversations and genuinely reach out to others you will be ten times more effective than when you drop by just so you can benefit yourself from it.

I really think that there is an opportunity here for many of us to take advantage of it if we do it in a selfless way.

When I see that others want to collaborate genuinely I make sure I help them out letting others know about there accomplishments and events?

I will be creating a future post on the things people do that work against them when collaborating on online communities. If you don’t want to miss the post feel free to subscribe to my blog via email.

The connections in life that really end up making a difference are a mix of serendipity and conscious work towards them. From my experience, the spark might be conscious (you participating in communities, blogs, twitter chats etc) but then, the real connection happens almost randomly, leaving you “:O” most of the times.

I think I could have not described it better than with your Emoticon Phrase “leaving you “:O” most of the times”.

I have to agree there are many factors to who these things happen!

Nough said. Those who don’t believe that social media for business works, you’re probably not doing it correctly. It’s all about ENGAGING by SERVING others. Online or offline, when you pay it forward, the rewards are endless. Thank you Raul Colon, mi primo, for this post.
